Dragon Well (Longjing) is a prized Chinese green tea with a sweet, nutty, and vegetal flavor profile. It is renowned for its high quality and distinctive, flattened spear-like leaves. This varieties come from panchagarh (Bangladesh)"
Flavor profile and appearance
- Taste: The flavor is famously mellow and well-rounded, with nutty undertones often compared to roasted chestnuts or white beans. It has a smooth, creamy mouthfeel and notes of fresh spring grass or umami.
- Aroma: Brewed Dragon Well offers a delicate and fresh, yet strong, aroma of toasted grass or chestnuts.
- Appearance: The dry leaves are emerald green and flattened into a distinctive spear shape through a pan-firing process. When brewed, the tea yields a luminous yellow-green or pale gold liquor.
History and origin
- Imperial status: During the Qing dynasty, the Kangxi and Qianlong emperors designated Dragon Well as an imperial tribute tea, enhancing its fame and prestige.
- Longjing village: The name "Dragon Well" comes from a well in Longjing village, where it is said that the mineral-rich water created an illusion of a dragon during storms.
- Protected region: True Dragon Well tea, known as Xihu Longjing, must be grown in the protected West Lake region of Zhejiang province, where the misty, humid climate is ideal for tea plants.
-
How to brewProper brewing is essential to avoid bitterness and bring out the tea's best flavor:Water temperature: Use water that is between 175 and 185°F (80–85°C), well below boiling. Using boiling water can scorch the delicate leaves.
- Brewing time: Steep the tea for 1 to 3 minutes, or even less for the initial infusion, depending on your preferred strength.
- Multiple infusions: High-quality Dragon Well can be steeped multiple times (up to 3 to 5 infusions), with the steeping time slightly increasing for each subsequent brew.
Health benefits
As with other green teas, Dragon Well is rich in antioxidants and offers several potential health benefits:
Rich in antioxidants: High concentrations of catechins, such as EGCG, help fight free radical damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
- Boosts heart health: Regular consumption can help lower cholesterol, reduce inflammation, and improve blood flow.
- Supports digestion: The catechins may reduce inflammation and improve digestion.
- Promotes alertness and calm: It contains both caffeine and the amino acid L-theanine, which promotes mental focus and calm energy without the jitters.
